Locked Out of Instagram? Here’s How to Get Back In
TLDR If you’re locked out of Instagram, try these in order: (1) reset your password via email or phone, (2) use the “Get more help” option if you can’t access your email/phone, (3) try video selfie verification, (4) contact Instagram support directly. Most accounts are recovered within 24 hours.
Getting locked out of Instagram usually happens because of a suspicious login, a forgotten password, a lost phone number, or a security flag from Instagram itself. The good news: most lockouts can be fixed in under 10 minutes if you follow the right steps. This guide covers every recovery method – from password reset to identity verification – so you can get back in fast.
Why You Get Locked Out of Instagram
One of the first thoughts that comes to mind is why this even happened. It feels confusing because you did nothing wrong. The truth is that Instagram tries to protect your account by watching for anything that looks unusual. Even something small can cause the system to pause your access for your own safety.
Sometimes Instagram thinks someone else is trying to enter your account. Sometimes your contact details are outdated. Sometimes a code refuses to arrive even though you wait and wait. It can feel discouraging, but it is rarely a sign of permanent trouble. Most of the time it is only a temporary block.
Many people experience moments like these. Some get locked out because Instagram flags suspicious activity. Others face problems with two factor codes that never reach them. Some lose access because the email they used long ago is no longer active.
Situations That Lead To Account Lockouts
Understanding the cause can help calm your mind and give you clarity.
The situations that mostly lead to account lockouts are:
Sudden login from a new place
Consider you log in from a different phone or a place you rarely visit. Instagram sees this as unusual and tries to protect you by stopping the entry. Many people receive messages about suspicious activity even though it was their own attempt.
Trouble with two factor authentication
Two factor authentication feels safe until you lose access to the number that receives the code. You try to log in but the code never reaches you. You wait, hoping it will appear, but nothing comes. This is a very common reason people get locked out.
Password reset emails that never show up
Some people keep tapping the reset button, checking their email again and again, wondering why the message does not appear. It can be frustrating. Sometimes the email goes to spam. Other times the linked email address is not active anymore. And if someone got into your email first, they may have blocked Instagram’s messages, which is what happened in this hacked Instagram recovery story. Check your email’s blocked senders list.
Old contact information
If your phone number changed or your email no longer works, Instagram cannot send you a code. This makes login impossible until you update your information through account recovery.
How To Regain Access To Your Instagram Account
Now let us talk about something that truly matters. Getting back in.
These recovery steps work for Instagram, but similar lockout problems happen on Facebook too. Many people get locked out of both platforms around the same time because they share similar security systems. If you’re also struggling with Facebook login, check our detailed guide on how to fix Facebook login issues for step-by-step help.
Start with the simple recovery method
- Open the Instagram login screen
- Tap the option that says you forgot your password
- Enter your username, phone number or email
- Wait for the code
- Enter the code to reset your login details
Try checking the spam folder if the email does not appear. If your number is active, the code may reach you through SMS.
Instagram Password Reset Code Expires in 10 Minutes — What to Do
An Instagram password reset code is only valid for 10 minutes. After that, it expires, and you will need to request a new one. This helps keep your account safe by stopping anyone from using an old code.
If your code expires, do not worry. Go back to the password reset page and ask for a new code. If you keep landing back on this same screen every time you try, you may be stuck in a password reset loop — check that guide for a fix. Check your inbox right away, and do not forget to look in your spam or junk folder if you cannot find the email.
If Instagram says “Too many attempts,” stop trying for a while. This means the reset process has been locked for security reasons. In most cases, you need to wait 24 hours before trying again. Our guide to the too many login attempts error lists the wait time for each platform.
If you cannot wait, tap “Get help logging in” in the Instagram app. You can explain your problem and ask Instagram for help. When you receive a new reset code, use it as soon as possible so it does not expire.
Recover Instagram without your email or number
This is the situation that scares people the most, but it is not hopeless at all. Instagram gives you another path.
- Go to the login screen and choose get help logging in
- Enter your username
- Select the option that says you need more help
- Follow the prompts carefully
In many cases, Instagram will ask you to verify your identity through a selfie video. This may feel a little awkward, but it works very well for recovery, especially when your profile has photos of your face. It proves that you are the real owner and helps Instagram restore access to your account.
If two factor authentication blocks the login
When two factors are active and you no longer use your old number, the login process can feel impossible. But there are still ways inside.
You can
- Try selecting another way to receive a code
- Try your authentication app again
- Try accessing backup codes if you saved them
- Try the WhatsApp option if it was linked
If nothing works, you can use the support request option. It may take a little time, but you will eventually regain access.
Locked Out of Instagram with 2FA and No Access to Your Phone
If you lose the phone you use for two factor authentication, logging into Instagram can feel impossible. You know your password, but you cannot receive the verification code. Thankfully, there are a few ways to get your account back.
Try your backup codes. If you saved the backup codes Instagram gave you when you enabled 2FA, use one to log in. On the login screen, choose the option to use a backup code and enter one of your saved codes.
Check another logged-in device. See if you’re still logged into Instagram on another phone, tablet, or computer. If you are, go to Settings > Security > Two-Factor Authentication and update or turn off 2FA until you set it up again.
Use Instagram’s recovery option. If you cannot access your codes or another device, use Instagram’s account recovery option. Follow the on-screen steps and explain that you lost access to your 2FA device.
Verify your identity. Instagram may ask for a selfie video, ID, or other details to confirm you own the account. Submit the requested information and wait for their response.
Update your security settings. After you recover your account, connect your new phone to 2FA and save your new backup codes in a safe place.
Check your recovery email and phone. Make sure your recovery email address and phone number are correct. This makes it easier to recover your account if you get locked out again.
Be patient. Account recovery can take a little time. Follow the instructions carefully and wait for Instagram to review your request.
What “Here Are Three Easy Ways to Get Back Into Instagram” Means
When you log into Instagram from a new device or browser, you may see the message “Here are three easy ways to get back into Instagram.” This is a security check that helps Instagram confirm you are the account owner.
Instagram displays this screen for your protection. It stops someone else from accessing your account if they somehow got your password. The screen gives you three paths to prove your identity and regain access.
Option 1: Log in without a password. Instagram sends a login link to your email or phone number. You tap the link and you are back in. This is the fastest option if your email and phone are working.
Option 2: Reset your password. You request a password reset link. Instagram mails it to your email. You click it and create a new password. This is useful if you think someone might know your old password.
Option 3: Get more help. This option takes you to Instagram’s identity verification process. You may need to take a selfie video to prove you own the account. This works even if your email or phone number is not accessible.
Start with the first option. If it does not work, try the second. If both fail, use the selfie verification option. It may take longer, but it helps many people recover their Instagram accounts.
How Long The Lockout Usually Lasts
People often call this Instagram jail, and it makes sense because it feels like you are stuck. But the lock is temporary in most cases. Most temporary locks clear within 24 to 48 hours, though some can last up to a week. Instagram usually lifts the block once it confirms that your account is not at risk.
Only in rare and serious cases do lockouts last longer. For most regular users, the situation resolves once the system feels satisfied that everything is safe.
When You Need Instagram Support
If you try every method and still cannot enter, it may be time to ask for help directly from Instagram support. Use the get help logging in page to submit your request.
It helps to share
- Your name
- Your username
- A working email
- A short explanation of what happened
- Your phone model
- A screenshot if you have one
Instagram may ask you to verify your identity again. This is normal. Follow the steps and give them some time to respond.
Never pay anyone who offers to recover your account for you. One journalist who lost her Instagram to a phishing email was asked for $5,000 to get it back. Real help only comes through Instagram itself.
Your Instagram Account Has Been Temporarily Locked — How to Unlock It
If Instagram says “Your account has been temporarily locked,” do not worry. It means Instagram noticed unusual activity and locked your account to keep it safe. It does not mean your account has been deleted.
This can happen if you log in from different places, follow or unfollow too many accounts, or post many links or hashtags in a short time. Sometimes Instagram can also lock an account by mistake.
Most temporary locks are removed within 24 to 48 hours, but some can last up to a week.
If you see the “This was me” button, tap it. Instagram may also ask you to record a selfie video to confirm your identity. If you still cannot access your account, go to Settings > Help > Report a Problem and let Instagram know your account is temporarily locked.
What you should not do: Do not think your account is gone forever. A temporary lock is different from a permanent ban. Your account has not been deleted. In most cases, the lock ends after some time, and you can use your account again.
How to Prevent Getting Locked Out of Instagram in the Future
Getting locked out of Instagram is stressful, but it does not have to happen twice. The accounts that stay secure are the ones where the owner took a few simple steps after getting back in. And you are not alone. The same thing happens on other platforms, like getting locked out of Gmail.
Save your backup codes
Instagram gives you backup codes when you enable two-factor authentication. Most people never save them. If you lose your phone or your authenticator app stops working, these codes are your only way in. Learn more about how to keep your backup codes safe so you can actually find them when it matters.
Keep your email and number updated
Whenever you change your number or create a new email, update your Instagram settings too. If either is outdated, a future lockout becomes much harder to fix. It only takes a few seconds.
Use a password manager
A password manager like RelyPass keeps your login credentials, backup codes, and recovery information in one secure place, offline and always accessible. So if Instagram ever locks you out again, you have everything you need to get back in fast.
Be mindful of where you log in
Switching between too many devices can confuse the system. Try to use your main device most of the time. It helps Instagram recognize your usual patterns and reduces the chances of a sudden lockout.
These are not big tasks. They take under five minutes. But they are the difference between a minor inconvenience and losing access to your account permanently.
